The prayers | 2024

The series "The prayers" is the continuation of the "Metamorphosis | 2023". On the white prayer rug made of felt, in the place where the gaze is usually directed during prayer and the head touches, there is a small folded felt that resembles a butterfly or an envelope. The artist sees prayer as something light and mobile and links herself again to the experience in the cemetery with her aunt and deals with the questions: what is a prayer? What worlds and times does it connect? And how we want to find the purity and sincerity of a child within ourselves during prayer, so that our wishes can have the lightness of a butterfly.

METAMORPHOSIS | 2023

The “Metamorphosis” series was inspired by an experience that Nagimova had in her home village in Tatarstan. Following a family tradition of paying respects to the local cemetery before leaving, Nagimova visited the graves there with her aunt Minglejikhan. When the elderly woman, wrapped in warm woolen clothing and a white headscarf, said a Muslim prayer, the butterflies sat on her. She later explained that these were the souls of the deceased. The artist thus understood prayer as a multidimensional practice of knowledge, feeling and understanding, in which time, people, events and love exist in an alternative dimension and come together, if only for a moment.

The familiar flat shape of the felt with the colored patterns folds into different shapes and thus symbolizes the transformation of people during life and after life.

BAKIY | 2022

Felt, 180 x 220 cm

Light and heavy, silent and loud. A butterfly flying up and a waterfall flowing down.

For this installation i used the wool from my performance at Documenta 15 in Kassel. Since ancient times, the butterfly has symbolized immortality, rebirth and transformation. The mountain of wool from the performance, flowing into a felt river and transformed into a butterfly, is a metamorphosis and a continuation of the practice started with Davra collective.
